1646 - World Map by John Speed
John Speed (1552 – 28 July 1629), an English cartographer and historian, is renowned as the most popular mapmaker of England's Stuart period. His 1646 World Map offers a double hemisphere view with supplemental mini hemispheres of Water, Earth, Air, and Fire. Celestial phenomena including solar and lunar eclipses are also featured, as well as portraits of renowned explorers such as Sir Francis Drake, Ferdinand Magellan, Thomas Cavendish and Olivier van Noort in the corners. This fanciful mapping of the world was created with meticulous detail, making it both a quintessential example of Renaissance cartography and an eye-catching decorative piece for any wall.
