1644 - Map of Africa by Willem Blaeu
Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571 – 1638), commonly known as Willem Jansz. Blaeu, was a highly renowned Dutch mapmaker and publisher. Featuring cities, trading ports, and views of costumed people, his 1630 map of Africa became popular worldwide in many Latin, French, German, Dutch, and Spanish editions. It was even reprinted several times until 1667. Captivating features include illustrations of exotic animals, the White Nile, sailing vessels with Dutch flags, and colored regions like Abyssinia and Monomotapa. Though these large areas reflect a European sense of nationhood, explorers had yet to uncover the smaller ethnic enclaves and political fiefdoms of the continent. This beautiful and engaging map of Africa is a valuable tool for scholars and collectors alike – a captivating and timeless depiction of the continent from antiquity.
