Abraham Ortelius, commonly known as Abraham Ortels, was a cartographer and geographer whose 1578 atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum is viewed as the first modern atlas. He is credited with envisioning the concept of continental drift. This Antique 1578 Map of the USA is one of the most widely-viewed 16th Century maps and is acclaimed for both its function and decorative quality. The map displays the explorations of several people and largely follows Gerard Mercator's 1569 world map. A cartouche strategically masks the unknown southern waters of the Pacific, an area only explored by Cook's 1772-75 voyage. The western coast of North America is slightly misplaced as was typical of maps at the time.
