An A to Z map of Manchester, a city in England with the country’s fifth-largest population at 550,000. Charles Dickens is reputed to have set his novel Hard Times in the city. More recently, Manchester became famous for its indie music scene in the 1980's/90's producing The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets and James. The later groups came from what became known as the "Madchester" scene that also centred on The Haçienda nightclub run by Factory Records' Tony Wilson.
