This plan from 1802 captures a Paris entirely different from maps from the end of the 19th century. Notably, Isle Louvier is visible upstream of Isle Saint-Louis, a third island in the Seine River which was later annexed to the Right Bank. The Nouveau Mur, a defensive wall that encircled the city, was replaced as Paris grew. Curved streets within the wall are signs of the ancient practice of wider walls surrounding the old ones. Paris had formal planning, thanks to central power, wealth, and technology. Of few cities to expand both sides of the river, Paris has development on either bank. The map illustrates the strategic, economic, and cultural importance of Paris at the beginning of the 19th century. Its landmarks remain a testament to the growth and development of this world-renowned city.
